Enhanced Pauli blocking of light scattering in a trapped Fermi gas

چکیده

Pauli blocking of spontaneous emission by a single excited-state atom has been predicted to be dramatic at low temperature when the Fermi energy EF exceeds the recoil energy ER. The photon scattering rate of a ground-state Fermi gas can also be suppressed by occupation of the final states accessible to a recoiling atom; however, suppression is diminished by scattering events near the Fermi edge. We analyse two new approaches to improve the visibility of Pauli blocking in a trapped Fermi gas. Focusing the incident light to excite preferentially the high-density region of the cloud can increase the blocking signature by 14%, and is most effective at intermediate temperature. Spontaneous Raman scattering between imbalanced internal states can be strongly suppressed at low temperature, and is completely blocked for a final state EF > 4ER in the high imbalance limit.

Pauli blocking of collisions in a quantum degenerate atomic Fermi gas.

We have produced an interacting quantum degenerate Fermi gas of atoms composed of two spin states of magnetically trapped 40K. The relative Fermi energies are adjusted by controlling the population in each spin state. Thermodynamic measurements reveal a resulting imbalance in the mean energy per particle between the two species, which is a factor of 1.4 at our lowest temperature. This imbalance...

Trapped Fermi gases

Trapped degenerate atomic gases provide exciting opportunities for the manipulation and quantitative study of quantum statistical effects, such as the strikingly direct observation of Bose-Einstein condensation @1–3#. Although perhaps not as dramatic as the phase transition associated with bosons, the behavior of trapped Fermi gases also merits attention, both as a degenerate quantum system in ...

Light scattering in Cooper-paired Fermi atoms

We present a detailed theoretical study of light scattering off superfluid trapped Fermi gas of atoms at zero temperature. We apply Nambu-Gorkov formalism of superconductivity to calculate the response function of superfluid gas due to stimulated light scattering taking into account the final state interactions. The polarization of light has been shown to play a significant role in response of ...

Collisions in zero temperature Fermi gases.

We examine the collisional behavior of two-component Fermi gases released at zero temperature from a harmonic trap. Using a phase-space formalism to calculate the collision rate during expansion, we find that Pauli blocking plays only a minor role for momentum changing collisions. As a result, for a large scattering cross section, Pauli blocking will not prevent the gas from entering the collis...

Scattering of short laser pulses from trapped fermions

Rapid advances of trapping and cooling of alkali atoms [1] have led to the recent dramatic achievement of BoseEinstein condensation (BEC) of these trapped atoms [2–5]. Focusing these highly successful trapping and cooling methods onto fermions instead of bosons offers additional rich opportunities for studying degenerate fermionic atomic gases. The description of these magnetically trapped Ferm...
